Communication and Presentation

Research on Transporting Maths Content from the SFB to the Public

Images from geometry can serve as a visual pathway into mathematics. In the SFB they are leading in particular into pioneer research. This is to be taken as an opportunity: We would like to learn more about how mathematics can be communicated by means of visual content. And we would like to communicate new results from the SFB.

The SFB/Transregio is equipped with an active “Communication and Presentation” project, coordinated by G. M. Ziegler, who at FU Berlin also directs the Media Office and the Network Office Schools – Universities of the German Mathematical Society (DMV), and by J. Richter-Gebert, who created and runs the mathematics exhibition ix-quadrat and the internet portal MatheVital at TU München. The primary aim of the public relations activities are to communicate work and results of the SFB/Transregio to the media, the general public and young target groups like school children (particularly teenagers) and college students. By concentrating on the highly attractive visual aspects of modern discrete geometry and dynamics, we intend to enhance the public perception and understanding of current mathematics and mathematical research. Moreover, we seek to gain knowledge about the public perception of mathematical imagery by conceptual and receptional studies including gender studies both at the start of the SFB/Transregio and towards its end, combined with an evaluation of our own achievements.
