Swarms

Description

Simple rules in social communities can lead to surprisingly complex and seemingly coordinated global behaviour of a group. Examples are herds, fish or bird swarms, ant colonies.... An exact understanding of which rules lead to which structures, is not only an interesting research theme, it is also a foundation for applications. In the animation, the behaviour is steered by three rules:

1. Avoid colliding with direct neighbours and obstacles

2. Swim to the places, where your direct neighbours are

3. Swim in the same direction of your neighbours

How strongly the last two rules influence behaviour, and the number of the visible neighbours can be varied on the slide bars.
