Events related to the SFB Transregio 109

In May 2024 the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) Transregio 109 will hold an international conference on discrete differential geometry and dimers in Berlin. In recent years, the study of the dimer model of statistical mechanics has unveiled numerous and sometimes surprising connections to various areas of mathematics including discrete differential geometry, a core topic of our CRC. During this five day conference, international guests and members of the CRC will present talks on advances in the theory of the dimer model, discrete differential geometry, and related topics. Furthermore there will be ample opportunity for scientific exchange and stimulating discussions in an informal atmosphere.

"Solving the Bonnet Problem" is a documentary accompanying the work of three mathematicians working on the solution of a long standing problem in geometry, first described by Pierre Ossian-Bonnet. As well as their work, the film illuminates the life and works of Bonnet and his contemporary Gaston Darboux as well as the history of French Mathematics in the 19th century. Absorbing computer graphics help to decode the complicated concepts, making them accessible to all. "Solving the Bonnet problem" is the closing film on the film festival "Mathematics and Informatics" in Heidelberg on November 11, 19:30 - 22:00 followed by a discussion with the director, Ekaterina Eremenko. We present an algorithm to approximate the velocity field of an isolated vortex in an infinite ideal fluid (“smoke“) by the field generated by a finite number of closed vortex filaments (“smoke rings“). These vortex filaments in turn can be used to efficiently compute the time evolution of the flow. We indicate how the same ideas also can be applied in the context of approximating smooth surfaces by polyhedra.
