How to build a flying carpet from glass and steel?

by Dr. Thilo Rörig

We presented different applications of the mathematics to modern free form architecture: The first example was the new roof of the Cours Visconti in the Louvre in Paris designed by Ricciotti & Bellini (see Image). Hidden between two layers of golden metal mesh there is a glass/steel construction that was optimized by interesting mathematical methods. Further we illustrated how conformal maps can be used to map patterns onto free form surfaces for panelization like the roof of the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court of the British Museum in London. Finally we showed how free form surfaces can be approximated by planar and curved panels based on curvature lines on the surface.
