Der Sonderforschungsbereich/Transregio 109 „Discretization in Geometry and Dynamics“ (Sfb/TRR 109) geht in die dritte Förderphase. Von 2020 bis 2024 wird die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft das Projekt mit insgesamt mehr als sieben Millionen Euro finanzieren. Der Mathematiker Prof. Dr. Alexander Bobenko, Professor für Geometrie an der TU Berlin, ist Sprecher des Sfb/TRR 109. Der Sonderforschungsbereich untersucht die „Diskretisierung“ von geometrischen Strukturen und dynamischen Prozessen, also wie glatte geometrische Objekte wie etwa geschwungene Oberflächen in einfache Grundbausteine und kontinuierlich ablaufende dynamische Prozesse wie etwa die Flugbahnen von Satelliten in diskrete Teilschritte zerlegt werden können. Der gemeinsame Nenner dieser Forschung auf dem Gebiet von Geometrie und Dynamik ist es, diskrete Modelle zu finden und zu untersuchen, die Eigenschaften und Strukturen aufweisen, die charakteristisch für die korrespondierenden glatten geometrischen Objekte und dynamischen Prozesse sind. Ziel ist, nicht nur einzelne Gleichungen, sondern gleich die gesamten zugrundeliegenden Theorien zu diskretisieren. So entsteht mit der diskreten Theorie eine neue mathematische Grundlage, die die klassische Theorie im kontinuierlichen Grenzwert liefert, wenn man die diskreten Modelle verfeinert.

The exhibition "Geometrical Impressions" with pictures and models by CRC/TR 109 "Discretization in Geometry and Dynamics" shows 40 visualizations and 3D models of mathematical objects developed by scientists. It takes place since January 6th, 2020 in the Mathematics Library of the Institute of Mathematics at TU Berlin.

The Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) brings 200 selected young researchers in the fields of mathematics and computer science together with awardees of the most prestigious awards in these fields. Its seventh edition took place from September 22 to September 27. Dr. Felix Günther, a researcher in the SFB/Transregio 109 and alumnus of the first and third HLF, opened the HLF as one of the two masters of ceremony.

Prof. Dr. Gitta Kutyniok, principal investigator of the SFB/Transregio 109, is among the 2019 class of 28 mathematicians named as Fellows of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). She is being recognized for her contributions to applied harmonic analysis, compressed sensing, and imaging sciences.

The summer school Multiscale Phenomena in Geometry and Dynamics at the Department of Mathematics of the Technical University Munich is aimed at Master's students, PhD students and postdocs whose interests are related to the topics of multiscale methods for ordinary and/or partial differential equations. It covers a broad spectrum of topics of current interest in the area.
